Four to Eight weeks before:
• Call for
estimates and select a mover. Details that need to be checked are:
cost, packing, loading and unloading procedures including storage if
applicable.
• Purchase packing materials such as boxes, tape,
twine and labels.
• Send drapes, carpets or furniture for
cleaning, if needed.
• Check your homeowner's insurance policy
for coverage of your possessions during your move. If you are not
covered ask about our additional insurance.
• Get Change of
Address forms from the post office and send them out — it takes a
month for some businesses to change their records. Or, do it online
at https://moversguide.usps.com/
One to three weeks before
• Cancel newspaper
delivery.
• Get your medical records if you are moving out of
the area.
• Notify creditors of your move and arrange for your
bank records to be transferred, if necessary.
One to Two days before
• Have moving company
pack your belongings if you are not doing so yourself.
• Defrost
and dry refrigerators and freezers that are being moved.
•
Arrange for cash and travelers checks for the trip and for paying
the mover.
• Set aside small valuable items, such as jewelry,
important documents, and money to carry with you.
Moving Day
• Be available to answer
questions and give directions to the movers.
• Let the mover
take apart beds, roll carpets, and put mattresses in bags or boxes.
• Read the contract carefully before you sign it, and keep it
with you until your belongings are delivered and the movers paid.
Delivery Day
• Be available to answer
questions and give directions to the movers.
• Be prepared to
pay the driver before the truck is unloaded.
• Before you sign,
note any damaged boxes or obvious damage to unboxed items
